Netflix started the Chaos Monkey legend on AWS. From their 5 Lessons We’ve Learned Using AWS
One of the first systems our engineers built in AWS is called the Chaos Monkey. The Chaos Monkey’s job is to randomly kill instances and services within our architecture. If we aren’t constantly testing our ability to succeed despite failure, then it isn’t likely to work when it matters most – in the event of an unexpected outage.
While my requirement of randomly bringing down production servers doesn’t quite match Netflix, I needed a Chaos Monkey for testers to have a charge at our availability and resilience architecture. So I wrote a small app in .NET that can be run with various options but basically looks for tagged instances at a service endpoint and terminates them randomly.
